Dramatic changes in the American housing market have brought affordability and housing supply issues to the fore throughout the United States. In this course, you'll learn how to help your community address these issues with affordable housing approaches that create choices for all residents.

Not only are many jurisdictions in states such as Florida, Minnesota, and Arizona grappling with these issues for the first time, but as urban markets have changed, the nature of the affordable housing issues in the cities has also changed. New or revived approaches to affordable housing, such as workforce housing, employer-assisted housing, and inclusionary housing demand new understanding and skills from planners. This workshop will help participants solve a variety of issues, either as planners working for public agencies dealing with affordable housing issues, or for developers of affordable housing.

You'll learn

  • Options for site selection, design, and financing
  • Whether workforce housing, employer-assisted housing, and inclusionary housing are right for your community
  • Information on programs such as HOME and Section 8
  • Analysis of financial statements (pro formas) for affordable housing developments
  • How to identify suitable sites for affordable housing developments
  • How to address site planning and design issues
  • Financing alternatives and constraints affecting affordable housing
  • How to place affordable housing within a community's larger planning and development framework
