Recognized as a driver of economic development, a foundation of community character, and a reminder of who we are and where we came from, preservation is a key element of placemaking. Recent research provides important lessons for Michigan communities – local economic development and “rightsizing.” PlaceEconomics recently completed analyses in both areas for the independent federal agency the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The results of these studies and other recent research, and what it means for community planning, will be the focus of this presentation.
