SCUP Planning Institute Step I: Foundations of Planning in Higher EducationSCUPRaleigh, NC Higher education planning presents unique challenges and circumstances that requires a special set of knowledge, skills, and expertise. Participants in this full-day workshop will learn how to employ their planning skills in a higher education environment.
We will outline the fundamentals of planning, including political considerations, within the college, university, and community college settings. These fundamentals include how the planning function may be organized and executed in a range of institutional types. Participants will gain insights into how strategic planning can help institutions mobilize for action, aid in the effective allocation of resources, and gain competitive advantage. Participants will leave Step I with an increased appreciation of the various issues and practical tactics associated with the successful implementation of a planning process in an institution of higher education. SCUP's Walnut College case study allows participants to apply new skills and knowledge acquired throughout the workshop to the problems and concerns of higher education planning. This is Step I of SCUP's three-step Planning Institute, leading to a certificate of completion.
Learning Outcomes
1. Define the basic elements of planning as applied in higher education.
2. Practice integrated planning in the context of higher education, using exercises and a case study.
3. Discuss the social and political context of integrated planning within higher education.
4. Analyze the value of evidence-based planning and leave prepared to apply evidence-based planning in a real-life context.
More Instructors: Rebecca Adams Rebecca G. Adams is professor of sociology and gerontology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where since 1983 she has served alternately as a faculty member and in a variety of planning roles and administrative positions, most recently as associate provost for planning and assessment. As associate provost, Adams's responsibilities included strategic planning, academic program planning, annual reporting, institutional research, academic program assessment, institutional effectiveness, and accreditation. In this role, she coordinated the implementation and assessment of UNCG's strategic plan, the development of which she had led as a faculty member, and also served as liaison to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Her service as associate provost was a natural outgrowth of her involvement in planning and assessment throughout her career, beginning with her work on the development of goals for UNCG's sociology department in 1984 and including her oversight of the development of two versions of UNCG's mission statement in the early 2000s, service as chair of UNCG's 2003 SACS Self-Study Steering Committee, service on the Institutional Effectiveness Committee during this same time period, membership on the UNCG Planning Council and the subcommittee that drafted the UNCG Plan 2003-2008, membership on the College Budget and Planning Committee, stint as interim assistant vice chancellor for information technology and planning in 2004-2005, and immediately before overseeing the development of the UNCG Strategic Plan 2009-2014, oversight of the development of UNCG’s response to the UNC system strategic plan, UNC Tomorrow.
