Channel District CRA WalkaboutAPA Florida Chapter, Suncoast SectionTampa, FL This event is composed of a presentation and walking tour. The presentation will discuss the history of the Channel District CRA in Downtown Tampa and its evolution from an industrial backbone of the City into a hip urban neighborhood. Following the presentation, we’ll take to the streets for a walking tour led by three experts instrumental in the success of the District’s redevelopment. We will identify current and future development sites and discuss how the Master Plan for the CRA has come to life in just ten years, even during one of the worst recessions in our nation’s history.
Instructors: Michael English AICP Michael English, Principal of Urban Planning and Design at Tindale Oliver & Associates, Inc. Mr. English is a corporate leader in community planning and redevelopment, He has an extensive background in urban redevelopment, urban design, transit planning, and sustainable growth planning. His career also includes real estate development, community and comprehensive planning, and forensic planning. Mr. English is also a committed community leader and volunteer in community activities, including the Planning Commission, the Tampa Downtown Partnership, the Westshore Alliance, Tampa Historic Streetcar, Inc., the FSU Marine Science Laboratory, and the Tampa Heights Community Garden. He served as the consultant project manager for the development of the Community Redevelopment Area Plan for the Channel District in 2002.
Michael Hatchett Michael Hatchett, Director of the City of Tampa’s Economic and Urban Development Department. Michael Hatchett is responsible for managing the City's participation in the redevelopment of the Downtown, Channel District, Tampa Heights Riverfront, and Central Park Community Redevelopment Areas. He also represents the City in partnering with the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation in business recruitment, expansion and retention activities. Michael was previously employed as a planner with the city's East Tampa Development Division. Other work experience includes a planning position with the City's Housing and Community Development Division, youth substance abuse prevention programming and countywide land-use planning and zoning administration. A Georgia native, Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and a Master of Public Administration degree from Georgia Southern University.
Shaun Drinkard Shaun Drinkard currently is the Director of Placemaking with the Tampa Downtown Partnership, where he takes a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. His work involves looking at, listening to, and asking questions of the people who live, work and play in urban spaces to discover their needs and aspirations. Shaun helps visions evolve quickly into implementation strategies, beginning with small-scale, do-able improvements that can immediately bring benefits to public spaces and the people who use them. Prior to his current position Shaun worked for WilsonMiller Stantec in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. Aside from his professional life Shaun enjoys experiencing the outdoor urban lifestyle by exploring the cities on both sides of the bay (Tampa & St. Petersburg) via cycling, running, and kayaking.
