A Net Zero City of Las Vegas APA Nevada ChapterLas Vegas, NV Over the past three years, the City of Las Vegas has invested more than $65 million from Federal, state, and municipal funding sources into energy and sustainability projects in City operations and in the community. As these projects have been completed, monitoring of the results has begun and the City has installed nearly 5 MW of renewable energy, 40,000 new LED streetlights, constructed 4 LEED public buildings, and reduced overall energy costs more than $3 million since 2009.
But after the initial investment, what’s next? Beginning in 2012, the City will embark on its next long-term plan: to become the nationwide leader that reduces its energy, water, and waste to near zero levels. AICP members will learn about strategies the City is utilizing to reduce its overall consumption and what steps other organizations can take.
