Delaware Valley Smart Growth Alliance's "American Dream or American Nightmare: Housing after the Great Recession"

Delaware Valley Regional Planning CommissionPhiladelphia, PA

The Delaware Valley Smart Growth Alliance presents an informative panel with nationally renowned housing experts discuss the future of housing and how it relates to Smart Growth - "American Dream or American Nightmare." Generations of Americans in the 20th century moved out of cities, seeking more land, space, and privacy. Since the second world war, every prior downturn was followed by a swift uptick and resumption of growth, satisfying our social norms of "success" and fueling our primary source of savings. Are we experiencing a long pause from this virtuous cycle or the beginning of a "new normal?"

The presentations and facilitated discussion will review the changing housing market and its effects on urban design, planning and development. The convergence of two major generations seeking the same housing opportunities which have significant differences from the prior housing markets could provide not only a new housing demand but critical changes to the location of population and employment.
