The Economics of Downtown: Identifying and retaining the right retail mix for a healthy local economyAPA Massachusetts ChapterReading, MA Free event This workshop will combine 2 past MDI workshops: Economics of Downtown and RetailVisioning.
The first part of the workshop will examine the fundamental economic principles that support a strong and vibrant downtown. Peg Barringer, Finepoint Associates, will provide information and techniques on how to use these principles to determine the best mix of retail for your downtown and encourage business attraction. Christine Moynihan, RetailVisioning,will build on that information to help us understand the existing merchants' role in the make-up of downtown and the value of retaining them. Information provided will include case studies of retail retention programs that target the right product mix as well as ways to provide constructive levels of support for traffic building, quality presentations and effective promotions.
The workshop will provide planners with a framework to communicate to downtown/town center businesses on methods for improving their business. The presenter will provide educate planners on concepts that businesses typically need assistance in and the ability to assist in–house or through a separate program.
The ability to communicate with existing businesses on public and private tools to strengthen their business and as a program market the businesses locally. This supports the sustainability of the center and encourages residents to shop local.
Instructors: Peg Barringer Ms. Barringer has helped clients evaluate economic development opportunities and implement effective projects and programs that have created jobs, grown businesses and increased goods and services in more than 125 communities. She has conducted economic and financial analysis, market research, training, business planning and other services for government agencies, financial institutions, real estate developers and community based organizations. She has expertise in economic development program design, implementation and evaluation.For more than 25 years, she has consulted on a wide range of project types including: commercial real estate development, downtown & business district revitalization, small business & microenterprise development, creative economy initiatives and a large array of customized research & analysis projects. Ms. Barringer has been a faculty member at Tufts University since 1991 where she teaches in the Graduate Program of Urban Policy and Planning. She has also designed and delivered training on a variety of economic development topics for many other institutions and organizations. Peg Barringer is a seasoned project manager, experienced with complex multi-site projects and large teams of staff & subcontractors.
Christine Moynihan Christine Moynihan has been involved in retail marketing and store design for over 15 years. She was Vice President of Retail Marketing for Clarks where she created marketing and visual merchandising programs to promote the brand in over 3000 independent retail stores across the US. She also led the team that launched Clarks company stores, first with a concept store in Faneuil Marketplace, then with a flagship store at Mall of America, ultimately opening 15 Clarks stores within 18 months.
Since 2000 Chris has consulted for a wide variety of retail businesses from bakeries to boutiques, cafes to convenient stores, salons to saloons! In addition to advising individual clients, Chris co-founded an educational program in 2002 called Best Retail Practices. This program advises retailers, restaurant owners and store front service businesses on store design and retail marketing. To date, she has helped over 500 retailers move well beyond surviving — to thriving.
