Census Workshop on the Local Employment DynamicsAPA California Chapter, Northern SectionOakland, CA The Local Employment Dynamics workshop will show how one can obtain unprecedented details on America’s jobs, workers, and the local economies.
The topics will include: Quarterly Workforce Indicators, a tool to analyze employment, hiring, job creation, destruction and earnings; Industry Focus, a tool to identify hot industries in a local economy; CED HotReports, a tool for analysis of key social and economic information for all counties in the U.S.; and OntheMap, a map and reporting tool displaying employment and home locations of workers.
More Instructors: Jerry Wong Jerry Wong currently serves as the Information Services Specialist for the Census Bureau’s Los Angeles Region. Over the course of 4 decennial censuses in 34 years of service, Jerry’s experience has been extensive in both the Census Bureau’s missions of collecting and disseminating information. He began his career at Census headquarters where he assisted in designing and managing the Bureau’s first major outreach program to reduce the undercount in the 1980 Census. In 1980, he served as a Census District Office Manager in Los Angeles. During the 1990 Census, he helped manage the outreach and promotional program for California. In 2000, Jerry was one of 3 Assistant Regional Census Managers responsible for the conduct of Census 2000 in the 19 southern counties of California and the State of Hawaii. Jerry’s data collection experience also includes supervising five of the Bureau’s ongoing health surveys and several one-time surveys in the Los Angeles Region.
For over 20 years of his career, Jerry served as an Information Services Specialist where he worked with community groups, businesses, elected officials, planners, other organizations and the media and trained thousands of individuals on the use of demographic and economic census data for market research, community analysis and planning, grant proposals, and general decision-making which involves the use of statistical information. He is a frequent speaker on cultural diversity and demographic trends. Over the years, he has also worked with numerous business groups including the Small Business Administration and various chambers of commerce to train entrepreneurs on the effective use of census information for site local and market analysis.
Jerry holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from UCLA and a Masters Degree in Social Welfare also from UCLA.
Active in the community, Jerry has held leadership positions and has served on various boards for a number of Asian-American community organizations in the Los Angeles area. Jerry served as a Commissioner for the Los Angeles Unified School District and was an advisor to the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks.
Lia Bolden Lia Bolden is a Data Dissemination Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau. With over 10 years with the Bureau, Lia comes with a wealth of outreach and data services experience.
Lia returned to the U.S Census Bureau in February 2007 for her third Decennial Census. During the Census 2010 national campaign, Lia worked as the regional Complete Count Committee Specialist and was the Bay Area Team Leader. She has worked with the State of California, local governments and community groups to form Census Complete Count Committees. She also engaged faith based organizations, educational institutions, media, businesses and local chapters of national organizations to become Census 2010 Partners. Post decennial, 2000 and 2010, Lia conducted data access workshops and presentations and assisted users with data inquiries.
Lia has had a varied career. She held a number of consulting, marketing, public and community relations positions which include, Consultant with the Bay Area Black United Fund, Marin City Community Services District, Disaster Prepardness Trainer, Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disaster, Account Executive for the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau., Director of Marketing for an Oakland/ San Francisco Publishing firm and marketing consultant for an ethnic marketing company.
Lia has a BS in Business Administration from California State University, Chico, has completed graduate course work at the University of San Francisco.
Hing Wong AICP Hing Wong is a senior regional planner with the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) which represents the nine counties and 101 cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. As an analyst and demographer, he produces projections, forecasts, and economic studies for the region.
Hing also teaches urban planning courses in quantitative methodology at San José State University. He received his Master of Urban and Regional Planning at San José State University and completed his undergraduate studies in Urban/Economic Geography at U.C. Berkeley.
Hing serves as the Vice President for Public Information on the APA California Board and as the California Planning Foundation Liaison on the APA California Northern Section Board. He served eight years as Treasurer for the California Planning Foundation. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
