Transportation & Logistics Regional Update and the Response to Super Storm SandyNAIOP New Jersey ChapterElizabeth, NJ NAIOP NJ’s “Transportation & Logistics Regional Update” will begin with presentations by key policy makers from NJ’s Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Port Authority of NY & NJ. During this presentation, planners will learn about the agencies’ current infrastructure improvement projects, response to Hurricane Sandy, and their plans for providing resiliency in the region’s transportation, logistics & distribution (TLD) network.
This presentation will be followed by an interactive expert panel made up of representatives from trucking, rail, container terminal and logistics firms that will address: the basics of the supply chain and the challenges and opportunities associated with supply chain management; the inner workings of the TLD industry within the port region of NY & NJ; state and federal policies that impact the port region; and the key role that the TLD sector plays in the region’s economy.
Featured speakers include Bill Baroni (Deputy Director, Port Authority of NY & NJ), James Simpson (Commissioner, NJ DOT), Anne Strauss-Wieder (Principal, A. Strauss-Wieder Inc.), and Rick Crawford (Norfolk Southern Corporation).
More Instructors: Anne Strauss-Wieder With over 30 years of experience, Ms. Strauss-Wieder is an expert in distribution and logistics and recognized for her work in industry analysis, combining economic development with trans-portation investment, private sector and community involvement, freight projections, economic impact studies, and approaches to project facilitation and development. Throughout her career, Ms. Strauss-Wieder has worked closely and collaboratively with private sector stakeholders and public sector interests to ensure that projects reflect market realities and customer needs along with community considerations. She is also now serving as President of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals New Jersey Roundtable. Jim Simpson In his capacity as Commissioner, Jim also is Chairman of NJ TRANSIT, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the South Jersey Transportation Authority and the Transportation Trust Fund Authority overseeing a total of 16,000 employees, approximately $4 billion in capital funds and almost $4 billion in operating funds. Jim also serves on the Motor Vehicle Commission, the State's three Metropolitan Planning Organizations and the State Planning Commission.
Prior to his appointment as Commissioner of Transportation he served as Chairman of both an infrastructure management company and an international relocation company.
In 2005, President Bush nominated Jim to serve as Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), serving until the end of 2008. In 2004, Jim was appointed by President Bush and was Chairman of the St. Lawrence Seaway Board at the US Department of Transportation. Jim has been confirmed by the United States Senate twice. At the FTA, Jim managed an annual budget of more than $10 billion and had oversight of $30 billion of transit construction.
In 1995, New York Governor George E. Pataki appointed and the Senate confirmed Jim as a Commissioner of the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority, where he served for 10 years.
Governor Pataki also appointed Jim as a member of the New York State Job Development Authority. Under Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's administration, he was appointed Honorary Deputy Police Commissioner for the New York Police Department. Jim also represented the New York City Council at the New York State Financial Control Board for nine years and served on numerous not-for-profit boards.
Jim worked as a tractor-trailer driver and salesman while attending St. John's University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. After graduation, he built a small trucking company into an international transportation company in less than 10 years and served as President for 25 years. At age 36, Jim was a finalist for the National Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Jim is a David Rockefeller Fellow, a British-American Fellow; a pilot rated for Jet Aircraft and has driven motorcycles for more than 35 years.
Bill Baroni Bill Baroni was appointed to the role of Deputy Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in March 2010 by Governor Christie.
In his role, Bill is responsible for managing the Port Authority’s various transportation assets including five airports, six Hudson River crossings, the PATH transit system and the largest seaport on the East Coast. Additionally, he is deeply engaged in the Port Authority’s mission to rebuild the World Trade Center site that was destroyed during the attacks of September 11, 2001. Bill Baroni works every day to ensure that the New Jersey/New York region remains a powerful engine to create jobs, drive economic activity and keep people and goods moving efficiently and safely.
Prior to assuming his Port Authority post, Mr. Baroni represented portions of Mercer and Middlesex Counties as a New Jersey State Senator. He began his legislative career in the New Jersey Assembly, winning his first term in 2003 and re-election in 2005. He served on the New Jersey Citizens’ Clean Elections Commission and was a member of the Assembly Education and Higher Education committees and the Joint Committee on the Public Schools. While serving as a legislator, the Aspen Institute selected Mr. Baroni for its public leadership fellowship program.
Mr. Baroni is also currently an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University Law School where he teaches Professional Responsibility along with Election Law, Education Law, and Legislation. He was named “Adjunct Professor of the Year” in 2004 and 2011 and received the Congressman Peter W. Rodino Award in 2007.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Baroni is committed to his community. Mr. Baroni served as Chairman of the Board of Mercer County Community College, which serves more than 13,000 students, and he has also held positions on the Hamilton Township Planning Board and the foundation boards of The College of New Jersey, the Hamilton YMCA, the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra, La Boheme Opera and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He also served on the Board of Directors for Visitation Home, a shared residence for New Jersey residents with developmental disabilities.
Mr. Baroni holds a bachelor of arts from George Washington University, where he majored in history and graduated magna cum laude with special honors. He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School.
