Wayfinding Options for CyclistsAssociation of Pedestrian and Bicycle ProfessionalsCedarburg, WI Bicycle wayfinding signs are different than other signs placed in the right of way because they are part of a system of sequential destination information; thus, planning, placement and maintenance are critical to maintaining the system. This webinar will go beyond the guidance found in the MUTCD and the 2012 AASHTO Bicycle Guide to consider the details of developing and implementing a city-wide bicycle sign system. Planners, engineers, municipal staff and consultants should attend this webinar to gain a better understanding of an increasingly common bicycle facility.
The presentation will cover these topics: The value of providing wayfinding for urban cyclists; approaches to planning and implementation; strategies to determine and prioritize signed bicycle routes; issues of planning, placement and maintenance of signs, including sign design and placement within the right of way that integrates guidelines from the 2009 MUTCD, the 2012 AASHTO Bicycle Guide, and the AASHTO Green Book; and special issues related to trails.
Examples from Seattle, Baltimore, and other locations will be included. (APBP suggests following up with the webinar on January 16, which will address the topic of Best Practices in Pedestrian Wayfinding.)
More Instructors: Virginia Coffman Virginia Coffman is a Senior Planner at Toole Design Group. One of her expertises is bicycle wayfinding from designing, planning and overseeing installation to detailing guidelines. She led the development of the Bicycle Wayfinding system in Seattle (nearly 100 miles) as well as the development of a pedestrian wayfinding system and wayfinding guidelines for cities around the country. Prior to joining Toole Design Group, Gina worked for the Seattle Department of Transportation and was the primary planner for the implementation of the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan between 2009 and 2011. She has a masters degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington where the topic of her thesis was on how to develop bicycle wayfinding systems. Robert Patten Robert Patten is a Senior Planner at Toole Deisgn Group with over 20 years of experience in non-motorized transportation planning. He is an accomplished project manager whose past projects have included bicycle transportation master plans for Fairfax County (Virginia), Baltimore, and Cincinnati. In recent years, Bob has directed planning and design of nine of the firm's bicycle wayfinding projects which total more than 60 miles. Prior to joining Toole Design Group, Bob was a Senior Policy Analyst with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. (39 Ratings)
