Economic Development Workshop

APA Arizona ChapterPhoenix, AZ

All of our communities are struggling to recover from the toughest economic times of our careers. Many of our newly elected officials ran on a platform of creating new jobs. Many of them also promised to cut development fees and streamline the process for permitting new businesses. Now that these folks are in office, they will be turning to you to help them achieve their goals. How will you respond?

The focus of this workshop is how Planners can help to get the communities they work for, or consult with, ready to create new jobs. AZ APA’s first workshop of 2013 will feature planning and economic development professionals presenting information you can use when working with your elected officials.

David Roderique, President and CEO, Downtown Phoenix Partnership, will moderate a panel discussion which will include:

• Cindy Stotler, Assistant Planning and Development Director for the City of Phoenix
• Eric Duthie, Executive Director of the Real Arizona Corridor
• Christine Mackay, Economic Development Director City of Chandler
• Paul Ferris, Community Development Director for the City of Winslow

This panel will bring us all up to date on the latest thinking in economic development, including what potential employers are looking for in the communities where they locate and what employers best fit Arizona’s economy and environment. The panel will also share their thoughts on how planners can work most effectively with economic development professionals, both from inside and outside the organization.

Curt Dunham, AICP, President of Partners for Strategic Action, and Jerry Stabley, Planning and Development Director for Pinal County, will discuss ways that your Comprehensive or General Plan and Zoning Ordinance can create a fertile field for job creation.
