California Hotel: Rehabilitation from Conception through Construction

California Preservation FoundationOakland, CA

Learn about what it takes to plan, fund, and implement a successful historic rehabilitation project. This hands on workshop looks at the complete project cycle, beginning with early stage planning including economic and market analysis through execution of work with a team of contractors and building trade specialists. The California Hotel in Oakland was once one of biggest attractions for jazz artists on the West Coast, but by the 1980s, it fell on hard times. Now near completion, planning for this project began over 5 years ago to determine the viability of rehabilitating this National Register property for use as low-income senior housing. In the morning, hear from the developer, project architect, preservation architect, and the project engineer as they share some of the lessons learned on this project. In the afternoon, attendees will visit the site to hear from the contractors and restoration trade professionals and participate in hands-on demonstrations of the work underway.

Like any development project, careful planning is key to project success. When that project involves a historic property, special consideration of building stewardship at the beginning is essential to maintain the historical character of the building while equipping it for continued, modern uses. Join us for a unique presentation that explores the rehabilitation process from beginning to end. Discussions will include financing and market considerations, documentation, structural and technical challenges and unique up-close observation and participation in the final stages of construction at the site.
