Regional Forum: Center for Building Hope & Long Swamp EcosystemFlorida Planning and Zoning AssociationSarasota, FL The Center for Building Hope is a LEED-accredited facility. Speakers will include: Michael Carlson, Mike Burton, Mike Bell, and John LaCivita. The Architect, Contractor, Engineer, and Environmental Consultant will speak on the challenges of designing and building a LEED facility.
The 10,660-square-foot facility is located on a 4.81 acre site, adjacent to a wildlife preserve and wetland. The serene site includes preserved pine flatwoods, a wetland system, and an onsite lake in addition to sitting adjacent to the Long Swamp Ecosystem.
At the Center for Building Hope, support, education, and hope are the philanthropic endeavors of the nonprofit organization housed within this structure. The healing power of a green building was recognized in the creation of this facility. The project successfully integrates the technology of green building into a beautiful, cohesive design solution that serves the people of Florida who are affected by Cancer, as well as the entire community.
The team of consultants will present on the collaborative process to establish a "sustainability" program and the results of their efforts. Tours of the facility and the Long Swamp Ecosystem will be incorporated into the presentation.
More Instructors: Michael Carlson Michael has been practicing architecture in Florida since 1989, and founded Carlson Studio Architecture in 1997, where he serves as President of the organization. His interest and study of sustainable design principles began in the early ‘80s as an
architecture student at Ball State’s College of Architecture & Planning and the Center for Energy Research/Education/Service.
His Sarasota-based firm focuses on high performance design, and has since 2000, from government and educational facilities to residential design, office buildings, non-profit organizations, restaurants, interior tenant build outs and healthcare facilities. Michael has completed successful projects throughout Florida and held the distinction for having a project that was the highest scoring LEED-NC project in the state of Florida from 2005-2009.
He is a founding board member of the USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter (in 2003) and continues as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chapter. In 2009 he established the Sarasota/Manatee Branch of the USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter and served as the founding Chairman of the branch. Michael combines his diverse project experience with an ongoing dedication to quality in the built environment through sustainable design and building practices.

LEED Accredited BD+C, 2003 John LaCivita In his position as Vice President and Senior Project Manager for Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc., Mr. LaCivita directly manages projects from early development through project completion. John’s involvement begins during pre-construction with constructability analysis, detailed estimating, budgeting, scheduling and purchasing controls.
John is in charge of the office management for the project consisting of estimating, value engineering, planning, master scheduling, contract negotiations, subcontract procurement, coordination with the field superintendents and cost control. John has recently completed the FSU-Ringling Museum of Art projects. During the past 28 years, John has established a
successful track record working as a Vice President of a successful demolition firm, as a superintendent with a concrete subcontractor, and as an Estimator/Scheduler/Project Manager with Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc. for ten years. Mr. LaCivita’s experience as a general contractor and subcontractor
has given him a unique perspective on all aspects of how to manage a successful project. John became an owner and Vice President in 2002.

Certified General Contractor, State of Florida CG-C057210 - 1993 Michael Bell Mr. Bell is a Floridian and has spent his entire professional career in Florida. He leads Stantec's effort for the design and engineering of land development projects for public, private and educational projects in Southwest Florida. His particular strengths include civil engineering site planning, master drainage and stormwater management design, roadway, site development, and associated utility projects. His 28 years of experience provides excellent knowledge and understanding of site design and permitting while providing collaboration with the entire team of design professionals. He is involved with projects from conceptual design throughout the construction completion phase to assure the project is completed as envisioned. His past corporate positions as a Principal and Board Member with WilsonMiller, Inc. included Corporate Business Unit Leader for Development Design (Land Development) and Corporate Market Sector Leader for Public Infrastructure.

Michael Burton Michael Burton is a Principal, Environmental Services at Stantec. Mr. Burton, a noted leader in the fields of natural resource regulatory policy and habitat restoration, offers extensive knowledge and market expertise in the environmental consulting arena. He has dedicated his career to assisting clients in achieving their project objectives while protecting and restoring natural resources. His experience includes comprehensive project feasibility analyses requiring a thorough study of ecological constraints, including the identification of wetlands, protected species and habitats, and their potential project impacts. He has a successful track record of approved large complex projects, such as Developments of Regional Impact and other controversial works including marinas, transportation facilities, landfill and mining operations; these results were achieved by finding superior ecological solutions that match current community needs.
