The ethics session is critical to both planners’ education and is a mandatory component of continuing education credits for AICP certification. The session begins with a brief outline of the AICP Code of Ethics and its categories. This is followed with ethics challenges issued by a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP) from SW Florida. Additionally, audience members are repeatedly encouraged to comment upon the Fellows responses and/or present their own questions. This session is interactive, informative, useful and fun. Since ethics is sometimes a gray area calling for interpretation of integrity and individual judgment, presenter is willing to be put “on the spot” by the questions and comments of practicing planners attending the session. This course will provide training to assist AICP professional to understand and apply the AICP Code of Ethics. The Course will address ethical principles of the profession, ethical rules of conduct – both aspirational and compulsory – and ethical procedures. In addition, the training will emphasize practical application of the Code of Ethics in resolving real life ethical dilemmas. The procedural aspects of how the code is applied and the professional consequences of failing to meet the standards of the Code will also be taught. Emphasis will be given to how these principles relate to our everyday experiences as professional planners. The primary training objective will be met through a presentation, led by an FAICP-certified planner, discussion and question and answers from the participants. At the conclusion of the program the participants will have a better understanding of ethical issues per the AICP Code of Ethics, with specific references to Florida’s past, present and future. The event will be unbiased, not promotional in nature and designed to provide information in an appropriate depth and scope for the level of the typical AICP member. The course will be directly based on the AICP Code of Ethics, and the Code will directly reviewed. This session – sponsored by the Promised Land Section of the Florida Chapter of the APA - is based on a presentation “Ethics: Life in the Trenches” provided to the Florida Chapter’s state conference in Naples in 2012. There will be an informal presentation, discussion of the State’s colorful past, and opportunities for questions, answers, and elaboration. The educational objective will be appropriate for AICP members as they learn new developments in ethics, the ethics code and planning. The speakers will draw on professional experience in land use planning and other fields. The content will not be basic in nature, but will be an in depth discussion about critical matters to planners and other professionals.
