Tour of LID at Casey TreesCasey TreesWashington, DC Free event Take a look inside Casey Trees to learn how this Sustainable Sites Pilot manages stormwater with three green roofs, curbside bioretention planter, Silva cells and bioretention garden designed to grow large trees. Also take a peek at "Baby Boy," our 1,500 gallon cistern. Participants will learn about our other amenities including espalier apple trees and cool roofs.
Learning how to design for new EPA stormwater requirements to hold 1.2 inches of stormwater on site, in an urban infill project. Participants will learn about appropriate plant materials for the region, and large canopy trees that can be used in low-impact development. Participants will also learn how to design streetscapes for large canopy trees by creating space for roots to grow underneath sidewalks, using structural silva cell technology.
More Instructors: Emily Oaksford AICP Emily Oaksford, LEED AP, AICP, is the Planning Associate at Casey Trees. She received her Master's in City & Regional Planning and Urban Design at the University of Pennsylvania and her Bachelor's in Psychology and Environmental Studies from the University of Florida.
She believes that sustainable design can be achieved through context-sensitive and regionally-appropriate design solutions. She is an avid gardener, hiker, and biker, as well as a dedicated member of her community; she currently serves as the lead garden member of the Railyard Park Community Garden. Maisie Hughes Maisie Hughes is the Director of Planning and Design. She currently oversees programs that ensure policymakers, developers, designers and the business community use design and construction techniques that protect existing trees and create spaces to ensure large canopy tree growth. Maisie also coordinates Casey Trees’ Headquarters Sustainable Sites (SITES) pilot project.
Previously, Maisie was the Landscape Architect and Environmental Designer for Morgan State University where she coordinated landscape architectural services for all university projects. In addition to supervising environmental design, grounds and recycling sections of the physical plant department, Maisie conserved 8.5 acres of University forest land in the Herring Run watershed. She has also held leadership roles at Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission and DC Parks and Recreation where she implemented both environmental programs and sustainable landscape projects.
Maisie holds a bachelors degree in Afro-American Studies from Howard University and a Master in Landscape Architecture from Morgan State University. She is a ISA Certified Arborist and Serves on the Conservation Priorities Nomination Committee for the Smart Growth Alliances. (0 Ratings)
