An Integrated Approach to Waterfront Redevelopment

City of Oregon City
Portland, OR

Free event

The panel will review a successful waterfront project (Mill Ruins-Minneapolis) one that is just beginning (Centennial Mills, Portland Oregon ), and discuss how these projects can inform and guide the current planning effort to vision and master plan the former Blue Heron Paper Mill at Willamette Falls in Oregon City (www.rediscoverthefalls.com).

Planners will gain a broader view of the complexities of waterfront development through the lenses of an award winning project (Minneapolis Mill Ruins) and two that are just getting off the ground (Willamette Falls Legacy Project and Centennial Mills). In an era of continuously contracting resources, bold projects need more than great plans. Long-term champion building and strategic and synergistic planning are essential to success.

Topics to include:
*Use and power of catalyst projects for long-term implementation
*Role of public engagement in creating long-term champions for projects
*Essential role of adaptive reuse/historic preservation and open space in creating authentic places that can transcend current real estate markets.
*How to best target public funds to make projects successful.
*Project specific “lessons learned”
