2014 Speaker Series – Street Smart Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Campaign

Christina R. Pompa, AICP

This speaker educated us about the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Street Smart Public Safety Campaign. During the presentation, we found out that Prince George's County ranks #1 in the DC Metro area for annual pedestrian fatalities. The County's numbers are three times as high as any jurisdiction in the metro area. This has sparked discussion among planners as to what roll we can play in reducing these numbers. I'm not sure that any of us realized how bad the problem is in our own County.

This was very interesting but a lot of materila to cover in a short period of time. Additional lectures/panel discussions on the variations of planning law by jurisdiction would be very useful.

Good summary from practitioners, focused on the DC Metro area, in which the unique structures of DC planning are the equal of the strangeness of planning in Virginia.
