What Is It?

Try something different. Dive into multi-faceted discussions on technology, planning, and cities. Discuss the connections between planning practice and technology applications in a free-form UnConference setting and hear engaging 'lightning talks' from some of the best thinkers in the planning community. This UnConference format is designed to provide a venue for participant-centered learning and sharing. Come and be enlightened, make new connections, and offer your experience, ideas, and vision for the future of our profession.

Who Is Invited?

Urban planners, technology experts, and government officials – both APA members and non-members.

Registration is limited to 80 participants.

Facilitation

The event organizers are here to handle logistics and ensure that you have a comfortable space in which to collaborate, meet and share. The UnConference event is actually being "run" by everyone. Everyone participates. Unconferences are not about bystanders or attendees. If your topic is chosen, you do not need to do preparation in order to convene a session. No one owns the topic. We have bias towards interaction and discussion at the table, over breaks, and at lunch.

What to Prepare

Prepare to Share – There will be a mix of experiences and opinions in the room. Put questions to the table, asking for expertise: "Who knows about X? Has anyone done Z with Y?"

Prepare to Contribute – An UnConference isn't about the speakers. It is a place where tallented people come to share and challenge one another. Think about the event as a live interactive environment.

Prepare to Learn – If you're not learning, get up, use your own two feet and go somewhere you can learn. Hallway conversations are great for this. A table is reserved for 'And Another Thing ..." conversations.

Prepare to Record – Every table will be responsible for using the tabletop itself to record learning, observations, and desired outcomes. The table will be covered in craft paper. Bring your own notebooks, smartphones, and laptops, of course, but be sure to share your first or best thoughts with the group.
