Grants Program

The leadership of the APA Housing & Community Development Division is seeking to provide a one-time research grant to an undergraduate or graduate student in the amount of $1,000 for materials and/or activities directly related to a student's research in connection with a Masters Thesis or other student project. The purpose of the grant program is to both increase the visibility of housing and/ or community development and to benefit our members. We are seeking to fund high-quality research projects that can inform our members of new or innovative housing and/ or community development methods, practices, or programs. Recipients will be asked to present their work at the either an Annual APA Conference or APA-sponsored conference in their region. Housing & Community Development Division members will be given special preference for funding. Research Grants will be offered annually, contingent upon annual allocation and funding availability.

Grant funds will be available for use from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2009.

2009 Grant Recipients

  1. Jeffrey J. Beam, Massachusetts Institute of Technology for Holistic Revitalization in Small Industrial Cities: Ideas and Tools for Urban Housing Developers
  2. Alexandre Krieg, University of Florida for his research on the role of community development organizations in neighborhood redevelopment
  3. Emily H. Turner, Georgia State University, for her research on HOPE VI and neighborhood revitalization in Denver, Colorado and Atlanta, Georgia.

Complete Proposals include the following:

  • A six to ten page proposal that describes:
    • Goals and Objectives — What are your research goals and objectives?
    • Project Significance — Why is this particular project important?  Will there be any impact to the housing and community development field?
    • Methodology — How will you accomplish the goals stated above?
    • Budget — What is your proposed budget? (Please submit a project budget on a separate page.  Provide itemized breakdown, total of estimated cost, specify grant request — not to exceed $1,000 — and show other funding sources if applicable. Additional narrative justification may be provided if not explicit in Methodology.)
    • Future Plans — Will the results of the proposed research be published? Will you continue research in this area? Have you identified additional funding sources to continue your work?
    • Faculty Sponsor — Provide curriculum vitae of faculty sponsor and a list how your sponsor is supporting your research.
  • Faculty Sponsor CV and letter of support
  • Student's employment history (include any paid/ unpaid internships)
  • Student's volunteer history
  • Other student awards, grants, prizes or recognition previously received
  • Post-graduate plans
  • One-page statement of interest in Housing and Community Development

Proposals will be reviewed based on: merit, feasibility and organization of the proposed project; applicant's and faculty member's training, credentials, and expertise to implement the proposed activity; dedication of the student and faculty member to the project; and how the proposed activity will contribute to the Housing and Community Development field.
