Statement of Interest

I am interested in the secretary/treasurer position because I believe I can make a contribution towards a greater recognition of new urbanism principles within the planning profession, and in particular by showing how new urbanism principles can be better integrated within mainstream planning products. While the new urbanism has become influential at the level of individual development projects, it has not been equally successful in informing the larger-scale planning frameworks — such as municipal comprehensive plans, corridor plans and regional or sub-regional plans — that are the products of the mainstream planning profession. The growing acceptance of new urbanism-inspired Form-Based Codes heightens the need for a greater convergence in this area. I would like to see the APA-NU Division raise this issue within the APA membership and show how it can be better addressed.
