For Secretary/Treasurer
Karen Qunn Fung
Karen Quinn Fung brings a background in communication, community activism and critical technology studies to her current work exploring social media in public engagement for planning. She has served as coordinator for public transit advocacy and outreach projects for Vancouver Public Space Network since 2009. In 2007, Karen helped convene Vancouver Transit Camp, an unconference-style event exploring the intersection of emerging technologies, sustainable transportation planning and public transit rider experience. She has also previously been involved in Open Government West, promoting knowledge sharing on open government best practices and expanding access and use of open government data in both the US and Canada. She has been sharing her observations and analyses on technology, transportation advocacy, communities, and urban planning through her blog countably infinite (countablyinfinite.ca) since 2005. She will be completing her master's degree in planning in June 2013 from the University of British Columbia's School of Community and Regional Planning and is a New Professional member of the APA.
Drawing on her interest in software and web application development, Karen believes in "eating your own dog food" — that is, incorporating the tools one makes or advocates for in one's own everyday work. To this end, her work as Division Secretary for the APA Technology Division will emphasize thoughtful use of online tools to manage records and collaborate with Division executives and volunteers, and seek to make experiences and outcomes of using these tools broadly available to others. She looks forward to supporting the innovative work of the Division's various committees, including expanding division membership to more APA members and broadly promoting technology resources for improved planning processes and outcomes.
