APA Congressional Fellowships
The APA Congressional Fellowship program was started in 2000 to support efforts in Congress to promote smart growth solutions in the nation's communities. The program brings the perspective of planners to the federal legislative process. The six-month fellowship is offered to graduate students and immediate post-graduate students in planning or related fields. Two six-month fellowships are offered each year. Fellows receive a one-time $4,000 stipend. Fellows work directly with congressional staff in a Capitol Hill office. Projects include conducting policy and legislative research, drafting policy briefs, developing briefings and resources for congressional staff on planning and livability issues, and serving as liaison to congressional staff and advocacy organizations interested in planning and smart growth. The Fellows gain direct and substantial experience in the legislative process. Past Fellows have worked with the House Livable Communities Task Force and Senate Smart Growth Task Force. Recent fellows have been hosted in the offices of Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Sen. James Jeffords, and Sen. Carl Levin. 2007 Fellowship Program Deadline Has Passed The deadline for the 2007 fellowships was December 19, 2006. Two fellowships are being offered for 2007, from January 29 to July 29, 2007.
