The Minnehaha County Planning Department invites applications for an Assistant Planning Director to assist the Planning Director in developing and implementing the comprehensive development plan to manage the physical growth of the unincorporated area of Minnehaha County; in the administration and enforcement of County ordinances; in providing assistance and information to committees, commissions, and the general public; and in maintaining a Geographic Information System. This position is located in Sioux Falls, SD.
$2,002.80 - $2,156.80/biweekly plus benefits.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES INCLUDE:
Administer county ordinances including zoning, solid waste, subdivision, public nuisance, wastewater treatment, drainage, building code, and flood damage prevention. Research and write planning documents including conditional user permits, rezonings, variances, and temporary uses. Write County ordinances and ordinance amendments and provide guidance about ordinance requirements and permit application procedures to the public. Provide information, interpretation, and technical assistance. Conduct presentations to Planning and County Commissions about land, environmental, and agricultural uses. Issue building, septic, and agricultural drainage permits. Perform geographic analysis with GIS and develop graphics for planning applications and reports. Develop long-range planning documents. Write management plans for county parks. Assist the public by answering questions and providing guidance on planning matters including ordinance requirements and permit application procedures. Manage daily operations of the Planning Department in the Director's absence.
Bachelor’s degree in planning or closely related field with four years of progressively responsible experience in city, county, or regional planning. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. General knowledge of principles and practices of urban and regional planning. General knowledge of county government functions and state statutes affecting local government. Ability to perform complex problem solving operations. Ability to relate to diverse interest groups in coordination of county land use activities. Ability to train and provide work direction and oversight to employees. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.
Bachelor’s degree in planning or closely related field with four years of experience providing work direction and oversight to employees within the field of planning and zoning administration.
