The Director of Transportation reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Environmental Health and Public Safety and is responsible for transportation planning, parking operations, and facility design and maintenance in a multi-modal mobility environment serving a diverse population. The director develops and manages a budget of over $13 million with approximately $150 million in assets and maintains an ongoing forecasted five-year projected budget of revenues, operating, and capital expenses. The director must be responsive to varying transportation needs and work closely with the University Architect in the implementation of the University’s Master Plan. The department is a receipt-supported auxiliary enterprise within the Finance and Business Division. It is comprised of 45 staff members spread across the specialties of finance, information technology, facilities planning and maintenance, parking enforcement, parking services, transportation planning and communication.
Transportation services are provided to the 2,240 acre teaching and research campus, which includes the Centennial Campus and the Centennial Biomedical Campus. The department manages over 19,000 shared parking spaces and the operation and maintenance of parking facilities including 10 parking decks. The department is also responsible for permitting for students, employees, and visitors; campus bus transit; event parking; alternative transportation programs such as car-share (Zipcar), carpooling, park and ride; and parking compliance. Over 17,000 parking permits are distributed annually and 35 buses carry 18,000 riders on a daily basis.
The Director of Transportation provides leadership and strategic direction in developing and managing dynamic, sustainable transportation systems and develops cohesive and complex plans and programs to respond to the diversity of transportation needs within the campus community. The Director oversees operation of the Wolfline Transit System and alternative transportation programs; aligns campus needs with city/regional needs and planning efforts; provides leadership in planning, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure and facilities; and establishes policies and programs that ensure efficient use of parking resources, minimal congestion, and a variety of consumer options. The Director structures rates to ensure optimal utilization of available parking; facilitates strong communication and collaboration with constituents; partners with university organizations such as Housing, Athletics, and Campus Police; and regularly communicates with students, parents, employees, community members, as well as university administration and the Board of Trustees.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in urban or transportation planning, business, public administration or a related field with a Master’s degree preferred; and a minimum of four years of experience in transportation planning and/or management or related area. Candidates must have a proven track record of accomplishments in managerial positions in transportation as well as financial and budget planning experience; ability to effectively lead a large staff both directly and through other managers; strong analytical, problem solving, and verbal/written communication skills; knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and codes; and willingness to embrace and implement industry best practices. A strong commitment to customer service and satisfaction is imperative.
