A professional planning position is currently available with the planning department of the Lowcountry Council of Governments (LCOG) in South Carolina. The organization serves a four-county coastal region between Charleston and Savannah. The area includes Beaufort and Hilton Head, but is still mostly rural.
The Planning Department functions in a manner very similar to a consulting firm. As a result, the planner will work on a variety of projects ranging from regional transportation, hazard mitigation and public transit plans to preparing zoning ordinances for small local municipalities. The planning department also staffs the LATS, the first new MPO to be formed in South Carolina in 20 years.
Successful candidates must have excellent written communication and data analysis skills, be able to perform under deadline pressures with limited supervision and handle diverse project activities. The planner will work with a number and variety of local, regional, state and federal organizations on collaborative projects.

A master of urban and/or regional planning and a minimum of two years of planning work experience are required for the position. Energy, enthusiasm, problem-solving skills and initiative are essential.
