The Board of Directors adopted a biennial budget for APA, as recommended by the Development Plan and Budget Committee, to implement the Association's Development Plan for 2008-2009. The budget advances all the leading priorities of APA. This budget focuses APA's resources on communications and marketing planning, education, and growing the membership of the association. Also, the Board continues its commitment to diversity and social equity, as well as maintaining a transparent and open organization. The adopted budget includes funding for an APA Ambassador's program, through which APA members will be invited to establish long-term relationships with faculty at historically black colleges, as well as schools that have shown a successful commitment to diversity. The APA Ambassadors will carry the message about planning as a career into the classroom, at career fairs, and with counselors. They will also carry the message about opportunities and benefits of involvement with APA. For more information, e-mail getinvolved@planning.org. Ms. Nancy Somerville, CEO of the American Society of Landscape Architects, addressed the Board. The partnership and exchange between APA and ASLA is very much valued by our organizations, which have a great deal in common. At ASLA's annual meeting this fall, 22 percent of those on the pre-registrant list said they also belong to APA. The APA Board received a detailed report on some of the green initiatives that ASLA is undertaking, including the Sustainable Sites Initiative and the installation of their new green roof at ASLA's Washington, D.C., headquarters. It was announced at the meeting that Sherell Cockrell, Board Director At Large in a seat focused for a minority member, has resigned from the Board of Directors, effective immediately. A replacement to serve the remaining months of her term will be named shortly. At the recommendation of the Legislative and Policy Committee, the Board also took action to repeal 22 old or out-of-date policy guides.
The AICP Commission took final action to approve the bylaws amendments to establish a program of Certification Maintenance, after the publication of the proposed changes in Planning magazine and a member comment period earlier this year. The Commission also adopted a budget for AICP for 2008-2009, with an emphasis on expanding professional development opportunities, and implementing the Certification Maintenance program. Also included in the biennial budget are resources to launch Advanced Specialty Certifications for AICP members. More information on Advanced Specialty Certifications will be made available as the certifications are developed.
The Chapter Presidents Council (CPC) met and during their business meeting awarded grants to the Arizona Chapter for their public media education and outreach campaign; to the Louisiana Chapter for their statewide membership campaign for planning officials & elected officials; to the Missouri Chapter for the planning commission training; to the Pennsylvania Chapter for implementation of a campaign for required training for planning commissioners and zoning board members in Pennsylvania; and to the New Mexico Chapter to assist with citizen training. The CPC held lengthy discussion with AICP leaders on the implementation of Certification Maintenance.
The Council approved a recommendation to the APA Board of Directors for a one-year moratorium on forming new divisions while a DC task force: (1) explores the feasibility of networks and sections as alternatives to division formation, (2) reviews division formation criteria, and (3) strategies to strengthen existing divisions. The DC Education and Communication Committees were charged with identifying opportunities that Certification Maintenance offers to divisions in regards to education and capitalizing on the expertise of division members.
During its meeting, the SRC Executive Committee approved details of the new SRC Outstanding Planning Student Organization (PSO) Award and planned some exciting student events for Las Vegas — including a session on planning for your career, discussions with planning specialists from different fields, and the Student Exchange. The Committee is also working on strategies to better engage students and their organizations in APA programs, and to identify and develop future national student leaders.
