Access to Health Services
Equitable access to community health care services and facilities for all — pedestrians, bicyclists, public transit riders, and motorists of all ages, abilities, and ethnicities — is essential to the health of a community and the people living within it.
Community health care services include health promotion and disease and injury prevention and treatment services and health care facilities include clinics, physician offices, urgent care centers, large hospitals, and trauma centers operated by public and private for-profit and nonprofit agencies.
Through community visioning and goal setting processes, plan making and implementation, site design and development, and public investment, planners play an important role in assessing disparities in access to health care services and facilities, influencing the location and design of health care facilities, and facilitating healthy lifestyles.
