Using New Urbanism to Transform Commercial Corridors

CHICAGO — Learn how Lincolnwood, Illinois, used new urbanism as a means to revitalize a decades-old commercial corridor at the American Planning Association's (APA) monthly lecture and discussion, Tuesdays at APA.

A Lincolnwood special task force worked with Land Vision, Inc., a St. Charles, Illinois-based planning and design firm, to prepare the Corridor Urban Design Plan and Design Guidelines. Mahender Vasandani, Director of Planning and Urban Design at Land Vision, Inc. and Timothy Clarke, AICP, Director of Community Development for the Village of Lincolnwood, will discuss how the plan transforms the commercial arterial to include town homes, mixed uses, and a new downtown. The lessons from this project can be applied to other commercial corridors across the Chicago region and beyond.

Prior to joining Land Vision, Inc., Mahender Vasandani was the chief planner and acting director of the DuPage County Department of Development and Environmental Concerns. He was a practicing architect in Miami and the Chicago area and was an architectural consultant in New Delhi, India.

Timothy Clarke has more than 25 years of experience in community and economic development in the Chicago area, specializing in inner-ring suburban redevelopment. He has served as the Village of Lincolnwood's director of development for the past 11 years.

The evening discussion will begin at 5 p.m. at APA's office on 122 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 1600 (across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago). The event is free and open to the public.
