March 8, 2006 Mixed-Use Developments in Low-Density CommunitiesCHICAGO — After work and before dinner, join the American Planning Association (APA) for its monthly discussion series, Tuesdays at APA. On March 21, learn how to bring mixed-use developments into low-density communities. Douglas Pollock, AICP, Burr Ridge Community Development Director, and Robert Ahlberg, AICP, Vice President of Thompson Dyke & Associates, will discuss the planning and education process Burr Ridge used to introduce the concept of mixed-use development with officials and residents. Changing Burr Ridge's development approach allowed the community to embrace a new mixed-use village center that will become "Downtown Burr Ridge." The village center will include retail, office, and residential space on a pedestrian-oriented street. Pollock has served as Burr Ridge's Community Development Director since 1995. He previously worked as a planner for the Village of Lombard, Illinois, and the City of Indianapolis. His work experience includes organizational management, land-use planning, and urban design. Ahlberg is Vice President of TD&A, with approximately 30 years of planning experience. He specializes in agency approval, zoning, land use, and municipal planning. He previously worked as a planner for Glenview, Evanston and Flossmoor, Illinois, and currently serves as consulting planner for Wonder Lake, Illinois. Tuesdays at APA is 5 p.m. CST on March 21, 2006, at APA's office on 122 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 1600 (across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago). The event is free and open to the public.
