April 6, 2007 Rhode Island Senator Reed Honored by APA as Legislator of the Year WASHINGTON, DC — Since his election to the U.S. Senate in 1996, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) has remained a tireless champion for better access to affordable housing, and has led the effort to preserve the low-income tax credit, a tool that has helped fund construction of affordable housing for more than three million Americans. For these and other efforts on behalf of U.S. citizens in need of housing, the American Planning Association has selected Senator Reed as recipient of one of two 2007 Legislator of the Year awards. Highlights of his accomplishments are featured in the April 2007 issue of Planning magazine, and he will be honored at a ceremony later this year. Senator Reed serves on four Senate committees: the Appropriations Committee; the Armed Services Committee; the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee; and the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. During his six years on the Appropriations Committee, Senator Reed has helped to secure federal funding for mass transit and community development projects. He is also on the Senate Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance, and Investment within the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Senator Reed has provided stellar leadership as a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, which has broad oversight over U.S. financial institutions, monetary policy, and housing programs. He is a staunch advocate for creating a nationwide affordable housing trust with funds from mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Further, Senator Reed is one of seven co-sponsors who introduced legislation in February that provides cities and towns the tools they need to find permanent housing for the homeless through the bipartisan Services for Ending Long-Term Homelessness Act, S. 593. Prior to being elected to the U.S. Senate, he was a Rhode Island state senator from 1984 through 1990, and was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for three terms. Earlier in his career, Senator Reed served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Army Reserves until 1991. He is co-chair of the Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition and an active member of the Senate Smart Growth Task Force. Contact |
