June 10, 2008 Florida Academic Elected to APA BoardCHICAGO — Marie York, FAICP, associate director for the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions at Florida Atlantic University, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the American Planning Association (APA), a 44,000-member organization committed to promoting better communities through good planning. York, of Jupiter, Florida, will be one of 13 members on the APA Board of Directors responsible for setting the association's policy direction and strategic goals. York will begin her four-year term on June 11. This is a volunteer position. York has more than 25 years of planning experience. She has authored more than 50 research reports on comprehensive planning, development codes, urban design, transportation, housing, and economic development. She is the co-creator and director of the Florida Public Officials Design Institute at Abacoa, which provides elected officials with urban design training. An active APA member, York has served as chair of the APA New Urbanism Division and as president of the APA Florida Chapter where she also headed up the Growth Management Review Task Force. She also was on the executive committee of APA's Chapter Presidents Council. York is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an American planner. York is a graduate of Leadership Florida and serves on its advisory council. She participated in the Rotary International Group Study Exchange to New Zealand and is a Fellow of the Knight Program in Community Building at the University of Miami.
