In Motion: The Experience of Travel

Date: Monday, April 15

Time: 8:30AM - 12:30PM

CM | 3.50

Join Tony Hiss, author of IN MOTION: THE EXPERIENCE OF TRAVEL (APA Planners Press, 2012), on a deep travel exploration of Chicago buildings, streets, and open spaces. Stops include Lakeshore East – the new, 28-acre planned urban development where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan (among its highlights are a six-acre park and Aqua, an 82-story, undulating residential skyscraper). We’ll also take a walk on part of the Chicago Pedway, a six-mile-long system of interior walkways, and on some of Chicago’s unique double-decked and triple-decked streets. Along the way we’ll take a peek at Millennium Station, the rebuilt underground railway station that’s the terminus of the 70-mile-long electrified South Shore Line to South Bend, Indiana. Finally, head west through Mies van der Rohe’s Federal Plaza to the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) to look down through their glass-bottomed observation deck. This leisurely workshop will take frequent pauses to consider what we enjoy; what we hadn't expected; what we feel connected to or cut off from; what the city is like for visitors and Chicagoans alike. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes, and bring your curiosity. Transportation: Walking.
