In this session, Doug Farr gave an update on the LEED-Neighborhood Development standards and a framework for developing leadership standards further into the land-use arena.

About the Speaker

Douglas Farr is the founding principal and president of Farr Associates Architecture and Urban Design, established in 1990. He has received recognition in the firm's three areas of practice: sustainable architecture, urban design and planning, and historic preservation. He is currently working to initiate a new rating system and policy, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND), a targeted effort to create a LEED rating system for developments that incorporate green and sustainable elements into site selection.

Committed to energy efficient and environmentally conscious design at both urban and architectural scales, Farr linked his firm's practices to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's campaign to make Chicago the "greenest city in America." Working with the city's Department of Environment, Farr Associates served as the lead architect on the Chicago Center for Green Technology, a comfortable, energy efficient, and environmentally responsible building.

Farr is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Columbia University. He has worked in a number of well-known architectural firms, including the Office of John Vinci; Paul Rudolph; David, Brody & Associates; and Perkins and Will. His awards include the Young Architects award from the American Institute of Architects Chicago Chapter Annual Competition and the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award from the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois. He currently serves as co-chair of the Environmental Task Force of the Congress for New Urbanism and is past chair of AIA Chicago Committee on the Environment.
