Madison Street Corridor Revitalization

Tuesday, March 11, 2008 • 5:00 p.m.

You may have heard the adage, "Give someone a fish, feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, feed them for a lifetime." That is the spirit behind the Leading Community Change (LCC) program, a partnership between the Chicago Public Schools, Bethel New Life, and the Chaddick Institute of Metropolitan Development at DePaul University. By involving high school students in planning analysis and the development of recommendations, LCC exposes teenagers on Chicago's West Side to their neighborhoods from the perspective of professionals that work on all aspects of land use planning — municipal leaders, local stakeholders, and private sector consultants. Joseph Kearney of the Chaddick Institute and Doug Hammel of Camiros, Ltd. will discuss how this program has provided additional insight to a recent plan developed for the West Garfield Park community and will share how the students have graduated the program with a deeper appreciation for the role of planning in shaping the future of their neighborhood.
