2020 APA Winter Leadership Retreat
The APA Board and AICP Commission convened in Huntington Beach, California, January 23–26, for their 2020 winter retreat. On the first day, new members of the board and commission participated in an orientation session and were introduced to APA’s evolving strategy development process.
All leaders spent time discussing the impact and use of artificial intelligence in planning and considered implications for communities and the planning profession.
On the second day of the retreat, the leaders worked on identifying goals and objectives as elements of a new strategic plan being developed. The group also discussed APA’s approach to collaboration and knowledge sharing between academics and practitioners.

On the last day, business meetings for both the board and commission were held.
APA Board
The board discussed how to process an existing list of 18 mega issues, or strategic areas of focus, and current priorities for components. After these strategic discussions, routine board business was conducted, including the approval of the FY 2019 external audit report.
AICP Commission
The commission discussed the next steps in implementing new mandatory CM credits, including the development of criteria and resources to assist CM providers. The commission also discussed progress made by the Code of Ethics Update Task Force.
