The discussion of social media and "adequate and appropriate" forums was interesting. Many local governments are too small to have a "community information officer" like was suggested by these speakers.

Entertainment Districts: A City of Orlando Case Study

4

The notion of a "night time manager" being hired by Orlando was interesting, as was the idea of a "Sociable City Plan". Orlando also had "ambassadors" who help people with entertainment related issues on the street. They definitely have gone in the direction of the modeling from Disney and that is a good thing.

The presenter was quite knowledgable about current and future trends in this industry.

Brent spent the majority of his time speaking about the State's efforts to hamper the "Doctrine of Custom". He explained the legal framework in the Walton County case and the successive actions taken in response to their ordinance. He also spoke about the Pacetta v. Pone Inlet case and the City of Dunedin.

Friday, June 8, 2018, 4:03 p.m. CDT

Medical Marijuana: Where we've been, where we are, and where we're going.

5

Tara and Whitney did an excellent job with their presentation. Tara has a command of the marijuana legal predicament across the U.S. and was able to compare and contrast Florida's situation with other states in the union. It was great to hear Whitney's presentation about how Orange County has addressed medical marijuana in their ordinance. They both did a great job and I was able to spread a wealth of information to my co-workers because of their presentation.

The Central Florida Regional Affordable Housing Initiative

5

Alberto did a great job explaining the dynamics behind the affordable housing crisis in Orange County and regionally. A large amount of the presentation was about his jurisdiction's (Orange County) efforts, which are extensive and progressive. However, I wish he went into more detail about selling affordable housing as a concept to decision makers, the general public and developers. Its a difficult message to convey outside of planning circles.
