Hood Politics: Engaging Marginalized Communities

5

The speakers were amazing - all women of color who were able to wonderfully convey how to better engage with our marginalized communities. They were great at getting us to realize how important it is find better ways to communicate and build trust. There was an interactive exercise that helped us experience how it can be going into a situation where you have to approach people you don't know and find common ground.

Equitable Development & Inclusive Growth

4

The speakers made a good presentation and then had the class participate in an interactive group exercise (with 6 to a group) to role play different entities in a community competing for interest in a grant that would help their rapidly gentrifying community. At the end, we each rated the other groups proposals for a winner. It was good because it make us think outside the box of being a planner - we had to think like a developer or shop owner or HOA rep.

Road Diet: Richardson Case Study

4

The speakers provided very good insight on a project that was attempting to make a transit stop more accessible, while also adding bike lanes with several "road diet" methods. The best part was that they were able to share both the successes and failures along the way and how we could possibly avoid those with our own projects. Great visual examples were provided.

Making Things Happen in Cities

4

I loved this session. Alexis and Dusty are both great speakers, as is Anthony. I really appreciated their insights and especially their examples from their communities. Since the speakers all have a variety of experience in different-sized cities, I felt it was a very well-rounded presentation--as well as entertaining and informative. Reminds planners that they are HUMANS and not robots.

PLACE-making and Urban Design

3

The session started out GREAT. I really enjoyed it and had invited colleagues from smaller, developing cities to join. However, ALL of the case study examples were highly metro areas and it was hard to translate similar concepts to smaller cities. She was disappointed and so was I. It would have been great to have a variety of scale in examples provided--placemaking is critical in all size communities.
