One of the better law sessions I've attended. Timely, topical material that gives me a lot to consider.

Legislative and Policy Session

1

Tech didn't work. One guy didn't show up until 20 minutes into the session. I'm new on the Leg/Policy Committee for APANe and we haven't really been active before so I just wanted to get a sense of what other Committees are doing. I hope my committee doesn't try to raise awareness like this.

There's always got to be that one guy: Who takes over the conversation and insists on being devil's advocate the entire time. Who know what I mean? It can really drag a session like this down.

Des Moines’ Market District Plan: Transitioning a Working Industrial District into a Thriving Mixed-Use Neighborhood

3

For such a working industrial neighborhood, I would think that more live/work spaces, studios, and light fabrication/artisan workshops would be promoted in this area. Seems like a missing opportunity for missing middle housing.

Zoning: No Size Fits All

I did enjoy a "less regulation" perspective and don't get to hear that point of view to often. Good to see!

This is the third year in a row in which a majority of the situations were "maybe." Although it leads to good discussion, it does not provide a fairly clear picture for those in attendance.

How Art is Transforming Rural Towns

5

I loved this session. This has been one of the better sessions I've ever attended at either state or national conferences. It was great seeing how planners are able to utilize art in order to engage their citizens, which in turn creates a sense of pride of their town and gives them a little bit of ownership. It also provides a great place for visitors to enjoy the creative spaces.
