Planners generally agree that the future land-use map is critical component of any comprehensive plan. They are far less likely to agree when it comes to the specifics of what the future land-use map should look like. Should the map be very general or more specific? Should the land-use categories specify density ranges, or not? How should PUDs and other mixed-use areas be reflected? What is the “right” number of land-use categories? What besides the land-use categories should be reflected on the map? How much is too much (or too little) detail? A key consideration when seeking answers to all of these questions is how the future land-use map is intended to be used and administered over time. The session will highlight examples from a range of communities and explore — through the lens of the local government planners responsible for implementing them — the ins and outs of various approaches (both during the plan-update process and after the plan is adopted). This session will consist of a brief presentation highlighting trends and best practices followed by a moderated panel and audience discussion.
