MORE SESSION DETAILS

Planners occupy a key role in communities throughout the United States, working to create better places. Artists bring a unique perspective and approach as their efforts can influence how people understand and interact with the public realm and the built and natural environments. Through partnerships and engagement, planners and artists can make a huge difference in the quality of the built environment using a variety of creative placemaking skills. However, differing techniques, language, and cultures can be an obstacle for planners and artists working together. APA, Americans for the Arts, and the Boston Metropolitan Area Planning Council are working together to develop planner-friendly tools vetted by the public art field to increase planners’ competencies in working with artists. In this session, we will be sharing the preliminary results of — and seeking feedback on — a NEA-funded research project designed to improve integration between planners and artists. For context, we will hear from a Louisiana-based artist who will share his or her experience doing creative placemaking projects in partnership with government. Much of the session will be an interactive conversation with the audience — join us for a learning experience that will be highly visual, interactive, and fun!
