WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • How to conduct targeted stakeholder engagement to assess desire and readiness for TOD in individual communities and identify specific actions to overcome hurdles for implementation
  • How to apply proven strategies to move from plan to implementation for TOD in suburban municipalities, including advancing site-specific development opportunities, complementary public-realm improvements, and policies to incentivize TOD
  • How to tailor a planning process that leverages inter-agency and cross-jurisdictional partnerships to promote economic development without sacrificing established neighborhood character

MORE SESSION DETAILS

In May 2016, following receipt of a grant from the Federal Transit Administration, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) initiated a transit-oriented development (TOD) action plan to complement ongoing work to provide more frequent, convenient, and faster passenger rail service along the Hartford Line corridor as part of the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) Rail Program. At the time of service launch (scheduled for May 2018), the Hartford Line will provide enhanced regional train service between New Haven, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts, with connections to other local and regional centers in Connecticut and along the Northeast Corridor. Through the Hartford Line TOD Action Plan, CTDOT is partnering with interested suburban municipalities along the corridor to identify and overcome hurdles for TOD implementation while preserving and enhancing established neighborhood character. As summarized in the objectives and scope of the NHHS Rail Program, municipalities along the corridor have the potential to serve as “magnets for growth – ideal places to live and to relocate businesses that depend on regional markets and travel.” Learn about an interactive process with municipal officials, staff, and stakeholder leaders to identify actionable strategies to attain locally defined and context-sensitive TOD goals.
