WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • How to identify the limitations of a more traditional change-management approach and the conditions within which a more innovative approach to change management would be best deployed
  • Demographic trends that are impacting Denver, how they apply to other medium to large cities, and how they will create more exclusive communities if left unchecked
  • Change-management tools focused on improving equity and access by guiding the reinvestment and development at the core and edges of complete neighborhoods and great places

MORE SESSION DETAILS

The 2016-17 update to Blueprint Denver is requiring that the community evolve its approach to growth management in the face of rapid population growth and unprecedented change. The then-innovative approach of "areas of stability and areas of change" established in 2002 with the first Blueprint is insufficient for a major city that is largely built out. To expedite this evolution of thought and place, planners in the country's fastest-growing city must understand the nuances of demographic and socioeconomic trends; the impacts of other regional partners; and quickly changing preferences for how and where we live, work, and shop. From the influx of millenials and the exodus of families with children to voluntary displacement and a micro-parochial desire to age in place, Denver's new approach to change management is integrating equity and quality of neighborhoods, the importance of walkable and transit-supportive centers and corridors, and the shrinking spaces between them all. Learn how the new Blueprint Denver challenges the notion that the modern American metropolis is destined to sprawl by addressing placemaking at a citywide scale, context-sensitive design and all of the ingredients of complete neighborhoods, and transitions between vibrant, mixed-use places and nearby traditional neighborhoods.
