WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Incentives, mitigation measures, and requirements for affordable-housing production and preservation in high-barrier communities
  • How to explain the inseparable ties between housing affordability and seasonal or specialty economies that rely on natural, scenic, and cultural resources
  • How to define "affordability" in local, contextually accurate terms — not just as it is customarily defined — and fill a gap not addressed by conventional approaches to affordable housing

MORE SESSION DETAILS

This panel presentation features affordable and fair housing case studies from internationally recognized seasonal-vacation-resort areas: Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and the Berkshires. Learn about the extremely challenging economic development and housing issues that exist in places that you may have visited as a tourist — perhaps even using services like Airbnb. What are housing conditions like for the hospitality workers in the hotels and restaurants in these communities? How difficult it is in these environments to build a supply of year-round jobs in industries other than health care, tourism, and recreational services? This session is aimed at those interested in seasonal communities with niche economies and exclusive metro communities — places with affordable housing barriers in multi-million dollar markets. Learn how to meet challenges in for affordable housing in vacation spots, identify market opportunities and strategies in very high-end communities, involve employers in providing housing for workers at all wage levels and occupations, and use cultural/tourism/hospitality government revenues for affordable housing.
