The USDOT’s Accessible Transportation Technologies Research Initiative (ATTRI) recently funded six projects to accelerate the development of applications to enable independent travel by people with disabilities. In this panel session, representatives from the teams will discuss their vision for how their applications can improve the lives of all travelers — including those with disabilities — in the areas of way-finding and navigation, safe intersection crossing, and pre-trip concierge and visualization. You will be encouraged to provide information from your own locality’s experiences to address the gap in independent mobility for the disability community. ATTRI advocates for “complete trip” accessibility – if any part of a trip, large or small, is inaccessible, the whole trip becomes inaccessible. The application areas above are major components of trip accessibility that can be addressed through technology solutions, in parallel with other infrastructure-based accessibility upgrades such as sidewalks, curb ramps, and vehicle design.
