CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN: Oyster Reef Restoration with Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana

Volunteer with the nation’s largest oyster bed restoration program by bagging shells for use in a new oyster reef, south of New Orleans. The new reef will allow for the growth of new oysters, create new fish habitat, and act as a wave break that will knock down storm surge and allow new land to build up behind the reef. Coastal scientists and local planners will highlight the challenges facing the coast and the benefits of habitat restoration. Volunteers will work on the banks of Bay Pomme d’Or in Plaquemines Parish, and see marshlands, native birds, and possibly, alligators! CRCL will provide lunch with vegetarian options, refreshments, gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, and all other necessary supplies. Participants will want to bring a hat, sunglasses, closed-toe shoes (sneakers or closed-toe sandals) and clothes that can get a bit dirty.
