This panel will discuss steps a community can take to prepare before disaster strikes and tools for recovery. The panel will be moderated by Elizabeth Hull, a partner at Best Best & Krieger LLP, whose practice focuses on economic development and affordable housing. Panel members include: " Catherine Ures, Director of Consultant with Nan McKay and Associates, who specializes in federal real estate, federal grant compliance, and disaster-recovery services. Ms. Ures will discuss disaster resilience planning and programming. " Pete Parkinson, a planning consultant and former planning director for Sonoma County, California, who has both worked in disaster-struck communities and lost his home to wildfire. Mr. Parkinson will discuss his experiences both as a planner in a disaster area and as a victim of the 2017 wildfires. " Kim Mickelson, Houston senior assistant city attorney and past president of the APA Texas Chapter, focuses on planning and land use law. Ms. Mickelson will provide an on-ground perspective following Hurricane Harvey. The program will discuss resilience planning and disaster responses, with an emphasis on affordable housing, economic development, and the impact of new federal legislation and programs on the process.
