  • Freight activities and their implications for city transportation infrastructure
  • Benefits and disadvantages of converting retail land uses to e-fulfillment centers

MORE SESSION DETAILS

The rise of e-commerce is believed to have led to the closure of many malls and brick-and-mortar stores. Some of these malls are being converted to e-fulfillment centers. One recent example is Amazon's purchase of the Randall Park Mall in Ohio, formerly billed as one of the biggest shopping centers in the United States. This session will explore the potential impact of e-commerce on land use and the built environment. The speakers will present trends in commercial and industrial real-estate development, including the types of facilities and locations that are sought after by e-commerce companies and businesses. Presenters will discuss the impacts of e-commerce on freight deliveries and the design of transportation facilities. They will share examples of how communities have positioned themselves to capture the economic benefits of e-commerce and address some of the disadvantages of converting existing land uses to e-fulfillment centers. The panelists will examine the potential impacts of e-commerce on land-use planning and the design of cities. The audience will be invited to participate in a lively discussion on how cities can plan for the inevitable changes e-commerce will bring to our communities.
