When you start your Planning career in local government, you are so excited to help people and the community.  Let’s face it, this is one of the reasons we become planners! We want to make a difference, we want to facilitate change and help a community thrive.  Then you start your job and realize there’s a dark side that can take a toll on you if you let it.  Your college degree and on the job training prepares you for the day to day tasks and responsibilities of the job.  But no one tells you everyone (developers, business owners, citizens) will be mad at you! No one prepares you for the citizen outrage against you when they don’t like a decision you’ve made, the phone calls or emails with negative statements about you or the accusations from the public made against you when emotions run high at a public meeting.    Let’s examine the Emotional Politics of the job as Planner. Explore coping tools, ways to handle hostile public meetings, how to react to false accusations made against you, and learn not to take it personally.  Sometimes people just need someone to blame and unfortunately the target is typically the Planner.  Attendees will learn to enhance communication skills; work with the public and diverse groups; and conduct successful public meetings.
