The school choice debate in Missouri includes the expansion of charter schools and the introduction of school vouchers that can be used at private schools. Unfortunately, the planning implications of school choice are rarely discussed/considered. This session is an opportunity to learn from the experiences in STL and KC so that Missouri planners can bring a planning perspective if/when school choice legislation impacts their local communities. Attendees will understand the national context of School Choice (Charters, Vouchers, etc); learn about proposed School Choice legislation in Missouri; and discuss the impacts (positive and negative) School Choice has had in Missouri thus far, and what planners around the state will need to know/understand if school choice expands beyond STL and KC.
