Participants received a tour of Madison County highlighting the contrasts between the industrial and historic nature of the American Bottom area compared to the suburban fabric of the growing bluff cities.  The tour’s itinerary featured US Steel, America’s Central Port, and the Route 3 Corridor in Granite City.  In Alton, participants toured the historic downtown and then onto industrial areas linking Alton to Wood River and its focus on energy production – including the now-closed Dynegy coal-fired electrical plant and the BP Amoco refinery.  The group then travelled to Edwardsville’s Gateway Commerce Center, a 15 million square foot logistics center, Southern Illinois University, and onto Downtown Edwardsville, which has developed into a mix of restaurants and boutique shops.  The final stop on the tour was Downtown Collinsville, which has received attention due to it streetscape improvements and new businesses, and the famous World’s Tallest Ketchup Bottle.
